Okavango Swamp & Kalahari Game Park

The Okavango Delta is a unique pulsing wetland. More correctly an alluvial fan, the delta covers between 6 and 15 000 square kilometres of Kalahari Desert in northern Botswana and owes its existence to the Okavango (Kavango) River which flows from the Angolan highlands, across Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and into the harsh Kalahari Desert.

Generally flat, with a height variation of less than two meters across its area, dry land in the Okavango Delta is predominantly comprised of numerous small islands, formed when vegetation takes root on termite mounds, however larger islands exist with Chief’s Island, the largest, having been formed on a tectonic fault line.

WALKING SAFARI Explore

On a walking safari you are totally enveloped by nature. Set out from camp early in the morning, and as you become attuned to your surroundings you will pick up the sounds and smells of animals nearby.

Groups are limited to six persons and are accompanied by a guide with a two-way radio.
MOKORO SAFARI Explore

At Belmond Eagle Island Lodge a mokoro, or traditional dugout canoe, takes you over shallow waters to areas inaccessible by regular boat.

Mogotlho Safari Lodge

Mogotlho Safari Lodge, named after the majestic Camel thorn trees of the area, is nestled between a Leadwood forest, overlooking the Khwai River, situated within a 68 000 hectare private concession in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.

The exceptional location of Khwai makes it a regular host to elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dogs. This is the perfect location for observing the perennial drama of the African bushveld. This place provides easy access to the famous Moremi Game Reserve and Savute/Chobe Game Reserve for exciting day trips and is the perfect stopover between Maun and Kasane.

Phofu Eco Safari Lodge

Phofu Eco Safari Lodge is a bushveld oasis, situated in the Kgalagadi district near Kang on the southern border of the Central Kalahari Game Park in Botswana. Botswana is landlocked and has a subtropical desert climate characterized by great differences in day and night temperatures, virtually no rainfall and overall low humidity.

Dry season - May to October - Winter: There is little to no rain during the entire winter and humidity is low, typically 20-40%. Animals will concentrate around waterholes and rivers when other water resources dry up.

May - The temperatures are relatively cool, typically 10°C/50°F in the morning and 28°C (80°F) in the afternoon.

June, July & August - Be sure to pack winter clothing because morning game drives in open vehicles will be cold. The average morning temperature is 6°C (42°F). Night temperatures can drop below freezing, especially in the dryer Kalahari areas. Afternoons will be more pleasant with temperatures around 25°C (78°F).

September & October - The heat gradually builds and it can get very hot in October 38°C (100°F), but the average temperature remains around 34°C (93°F) in the afternoon.

Americans, UK Nationals, Canadians & Australians do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days.

All visitors entering Botswana must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months, except those with United Nations Convention travel documents. Visitors must also have outgoing travel documents and sufficient funds to finance their stay.

Valid entry visas for the countries which do require them may be obtained from Botswana's various embassies and high commissions abroad. In countries where Botswana is not represented, visas may be obtained from the British High Commission. Entry visas obtained at border posts are valid for a maximum of 30-90 days. Extensions may be obtained from any immigration office in Botswana.

No visitor is allowed more than a 90-day stay in every calendar year, unless permission has been granted in the form of a waiver pending the outcome of a residence permit application.

Malaria is of particular risk in the northern parts of Botswana between November and June and prophylactics are recommended.

Visitors who are camping or walking in the bush should be cautious of tick bites.

There are no compulsory vaccinations, but a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers over one year of age passing through yellow fever zones. Botswana has a good public health system, but facilities are limited outside urban areas. HIV/Aids infections are at a high level. Common sense should prevail in all liaisons with local people.

Travel Insurance is recommended and should include medical evacuation by air if this is not specifically catered for by your ground agent. Travelers should carry an adequate supply of their prescribed medicines with them.

Tap water in urban areas is safe to drink and all foodstuffs are safe to consume.

Drive on the left and give way to traffic approaching from the right. The general speed limit is 100km/h on open roads and 60km/h in urban areas.
